Removing Rust Stains From Tubs, Toilets & Sinks
Rust stains are unsightly and can make an otherwise clean sink or tub appear dirty and neglected. Rust stains can be challenging to remove and may become permanent over time. Possible causes include your plumbing system or water supply.
Keeping them in check requires regular cleaning with the right types of products. All-purpose bathroom cleaners will not remove rust stains effectively, and chlorine bleach might cause the stains to become permanent. The team from PipeMasters has some tips using a variety of do-it-yourself and commercial cleaners Success can depend on factors such as the material your surface is made from (acrylic, porcelain, or enamel) and the length of time the discoloration has been there. 4 of the best options include:
- Acids and Salt: try fresh or bottle lemon juice and add enough salt to be a thick wet paste. Apply and let it sit for several hours before scrubbing and then rinsing.
- Baking Soda: make a thick paste with water and let it sit overnight if possible before scrubbing and rinsing. You can try vinegar instead of water for stubborn stains (3 parts soda to 1 part vinegar).
- Pumice: recommended only for porcelain, wet the stone and rub area ensuing enough water to slowly rub the stain away by creating a slight paste from the stain.
- Commercial Cleaners: there are several specifically designed for stain removal. Avoid products that contain bleach. Some products may only be available thru commercial distributors.
Pay attention to areas prone to staining during the regular weekly cleaning of the bathroom and try to rinse and to thoroughly dry sinks, tubs, and showers after each use before the rust particles in the water have a chance to settle on the surfaces.
